The Whole Person Blog: Week Two, Day Two, Part 1/2 - The prerequisite of freedom
Interview with Dr. Mario Martinez:
Monday, January 6th, 2020
If you want to operate a vehicle, you must pass a driver's test. If you want to consume alcohol, you must be of drinking age. If you want to get into the club, you've got to be on the list. If you want to jump, you must first squat. If you want to take a graduate course, you must fulfill your undergraduate responsibilities. All this to say that everything has prerequisites! I had a client tell me a couple of weeks back that her mantra for 2020 was going to be LOVE. I told her there's a prerequisite to love, and that's safety. The tension and fearful emotions she encounters regularly won't allow her to experientially access love. Until she learns how to be at rest within her MindBodySpirit, expressing love will remain an intellectual endeavor, at best.
This insight and conversation were made possible by an understanding of the Portals of Wellness (POW): Safety --> Love --> Expression --> Peace --> Spirit, a model shared in the MindBody Code. This model highlights the prerequisites of what I'm convinced everyone really hires me for, and that's to be free. In this context, the term Spirit is synonymous with freedom. In short, you can't be free if you don't feel peaceful, if you don't express yourself consistent with your values, if you don't love yourself, if you don't feel safe. Safety is the prerequisite of freedom!
Dr. Mario Martinez discusses biosymbols as they relate to the POW:
"A biosymbol is a word, image, memory, or belief that has been given a cultural interpretation that affects our biology. For example, the word "stupid" is a symbol. It becomes a biosymbol, which we experience as physical sensations and emotions, when someone uses the word to describe our own actions. We experience our cultural history through the biosymbols we create, and we communicate them with both implicit and explicit language. I propose five areas of the mindbody space that manifest our most essential biosymbols. These range from our need for safety to our quest for spirituality. I call these areas portals because they are gates of expression of the total being."
This model has helped me clearly see that people think they need help at the level of Expression. Improving the quality of foods you eat, incorporating healthy movement, drinking more water, being punctual, and saving money are all forms of self-expression. However, if there are challenges at the level of Expression, according to the POW model, the roots of those difficulties exist in the portals beneath them: Love and Safety. It's imperative to understand that diet and exercise cannot resolve these wounds, which doesn't make them bad tactics; they just need to be put into their rightful place.
The highest priority in all of my sessions is to make people feel safe. Eye contact, smiles, kindness, encouragement, and empowerment all seem to do the trick. Ultimately, their foundational Safety comes from rediscovering who they are apart from the painful experiences of their past. This is what I call solving your Identity Crisis, and when I tell you it solves all problems, I do mean all problems.
On Wednesday, February 12th, I will be launching an online, 30-day course called The Whole Person Project. The emphasis of this engagement will be to solve your Identity Crisis (unraveling Experiences from Identity), which helps you reconnect to the unlimited aspect of who you are (infinitely peaceful, loving, and joyous), naturally leading to healthy expression of the foundational YES that you are! Details will be released on Sunday, January 12th, 2020.
In the meantime, join me this evening for a YES meditation, which helps you connect to the part of yourself that's awesomely unlimited, infinite, and good. Register here.
