"Love and belonging are essential to the human experience. As I conducted my interviews, I realized that only one thing separated the men and women who felt a deep sense of love and belonging from the people who seem to be struggling for it. That one thing is the belief in their worthiness. It's as simple and complicated as this: If we want to fully experience love and belonging, we must believe that we are worthy of love and belonging."
When I first heard about the concept of feeling worthy of love and belonging, I thought: That's it! All I have to DO is figure out how to feel worthy of it. Well, there were many years of trial-and-error, mostly because I thought DOING was part of the strategy. Nope, there's no effort associated with receiving love and belonging, only surrendering the idea that you ever weren't.
I came to discover that my formative experiences completely contradicted this notion. What helped me was to revisit those experiences, and create the space and time to grieve my pain and suffering fully. On the other end of those encounters, I realized that feeling worthy of anything is a matter of grace, and I've always had a choice to accept or reject the gift.
