Expanding the notion of self-care



When it comes to self-care, it's common to think of basic hygiene, in addition to eating well, exercising, and getting plenty of rest. However, I recently recognized this notion of caring for myself was incredibly limited and limiting. I've recently expanded the idea of self-care to include:

  • Paying my bills

  • Planning ahead

  • Being on time

  • Eye contact and a warm smile

  • Actively listening

  • Walking my dog

  • Honoring my word

  • Practicing empathy

  • Saying I'm sorry

  • Extending forgiveness

  • Leading by example

  • Domestic duties

  • Embracing downtime

  • Reading books

  • Healthy self-expression (such as this blog)


Framing everything I do as self-care has not only added meaning to my actions and value to my life, it's helped me become a more caring person, and has helped me fall in love with myself at a deeper, more profound level.
