Step 4: Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
Many of us hesitate to perform a fearless moral inventory as the demands of already being our own biggest critics and worst enemies is heavy enough. Though, this search doesn't open a can of worms as much as it closes them. But everyone is scared to see things for what they are for fear of what they will discover.
"Step 4 is about creating a good and trustworthy lamp inside of us that reflects and reveals what is really there, knowing that anything exposed to the light will become light itself. The lamp of the body is the eye. If your eye is sound, your whole body will be filled with light. But if your eye is diseased, your whole body will be filled with darkness. God brings us–through failure–from unconsciousness to ever-deeper consciousness and conscience."
I'm constantly reminding my clients to stop trying to change and to prioritize awareness fo why they're doing what they're doing, which is a fearless inventory of sorts. The irony is when you finally decide to look, what you'll discover is your inherent goodness, that your protective behaviors are actually protecting you from deep-seated fears related to the painful experiences of your past, and finally, that you're doing the best you can with what you've got. This, of course, all leads to foundational self-acceptance and freedom.
